Step-by-Step Route from Puerto Montt
Step 1: Depart from Puerto Montt (km 0)
Take Ruta 5 Sur for about 20 km toward Puerto Varas. The exit from Puerto Montt city center or from El Tepual Airport connects straight to the highway, bypassing heavy urban traffic. If you're flying in and picking up the car at El Tepual, you head directly from there.
Step 2: Puerto Varas and Ruta 225 (km 20–45)
On entering Puerto Varas, follow Ruta 225 toward Ensenada. The road hugs the southern shore of Lago Llanquihue with uninterrupted views of the volcano — one of the most spectacular drives in southern Chile. The route is well signed and straightforward. Frutillar is to your left; skip it unless you want an extra detour.
Step 3: Ensenada — Last Service Stop (km 45)
Ensenada is the last town with a gas station, a small grocery, and a restaurant before the ascent. Fill the tank here and pick up water and snacks. From the main intersection in Ensenada, turn north onto V-555, the road that climbs directly to Osorno Volcano.
Step 4: Climbing the V-555 (km 45–57)
The final 12 km up to the ski station involve sharp curves. The road is paved, but in rainy weather or when snow is present it can get slippery. In dry conditions any vehicle handles it fine. With accumulated snow you need a 4x4 or chains — ask us in advance which car suits your travel month.
Step 5: Arrival at the Osorno Ski Station (km 57)
Park in the designated area next to the ski station. From here you access marked trails, the snow zone, and the chairlifts when the ski center is running. Summit access requires a special permit and certified guide — don't improvise this.

- Base trail: a 1–2 hour hike through native quilantal woodland. No special technique required, suitable for the whole family.
- Lakeshore viewpoints: the best angles to photograph the volcano are from the shore of Lago Llanquihue before heading up.
- Petrohué Falls: 20 km from the ski station, still inside the same park. Your car gets you there in 25 minutes — a must-see stop with no extra entry fee.

- Lago de Todos los Santos: 18 km beyond Petrohué. Adds an hour to the itinerary but worth it if you have the full day.
